Women’s Health Spotlight: Understanding Vaginal Flora & Hormonal Shifts

When we talk about gut health, immunity, or hormones, there’s one critical ecosystem that still doesn’t get nearly enough attention: vaginal flora.

The vaginal microbiome is made up of beneficial bacteria, primarily Lactobacillus species, that help maintain a healthy, protective environment. These bacteria keep vaginal pH slightly acidic, which is essential for comfort, odor control, and protection against unwanted bacteria and yeast.

When this balance is supported, things feel normal. When it’s disrupted, symptoms can show up quickly and often repeatedly.

What Disrupts Vaginal Flora?

Even when you’re doing “everything right,” vaginal flora can be affected by:

  • Hormonal shifts (menstrual cycle, pregnancy, perimenopause, menopause)
  • Antibiotic use
  • Stress and lack of sleep
  • Tight clothing or synthetic fabrics
  • Sexual activity
  • Harsh cleansers

The result can be irritation, recurrent yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, changes in odor, or urinary discomfort.

Why Hormones Matter More Than We Realize

Estrogen plays a key role in supporting vaginal tissue health and beneficial bacteria. As estrogen levels fluctuate, especially during perimenopause and menopause, Lactobacillus levels can decline and vaginal pH can rise.

This shift may lead to:

  • Vaginal dryness or burning
  • Increased risk of infections
  • Recurrent UTIs
  • Ongoing discomfort that wasn’t present before

These changes are common, but they are not something women have to simply accept.

Where a Women’s Probiotic Fits In

A women-specific probiotic is designed to support vaginal flora, not just digestion. These formulas contain targeted Lactobacillus strains that have been studied for vaginal and urinary health.

Women’s probiotics may help:

  • Restore and maintain healthy vaginal pH
  • Support beneficial bacteria colonization
  • Reduce recurrence of vaginal and urinary imbalances
  • Provide support during hormonal transitions

They can be especially helpful after antibiotics, during perimenopause and menopause, or for women experiencing recurrent symptoms.

The Takeaway

Vaginal health is not a topic reserved for when something goes wrong. Supporting vaginal flora is a proactive, preventive step, especially as hormones shift with age.

If you’re navigating new symptoms, recurring infections, or hormonal changes, a women’s probiotic may be a simple but powerful place to start.

And if you’re unsure which probiotic is right for you, or how to pair it with hormone or non-hormonal support, I’m always happy to help.

Because caring for women’s health should feel informed, empowering, and approachable

This week on Intentional Living with Emlah, I’m joined again by my dear friend and board-certified OB-GYN, Dr. Pragna Patel-Dadhania, for a deep dive into estrogen, what it really does in the body and why so many women start feeling “off” long before menopause. We talk brain fog, anxiety, weight changes, heart health, bone health, and why estrogen is truly a whole-body hormone. If you’ve ever wondered whether your symptoms are “normal” or just part of getting older, this episode will change how you think about midlife health. Trust me - you’ll want to listen.

Low Dose Naltrexone (often called LDN) has become one of the most talked-about compounded therapies in the wellness and chronic illness space. But what makes it so different? Originally developed in much higher doses for addiction treatment, LDN uses a much smaller dose, typically around 1.5–4.5 mg, and is being explored for its potential role in supporting inflammation balance, immune function, discomfort, fatigue, and overall wellness. What’s especially interesting is that researchers...

We often think about health as the supplements we take, the foods we eat, or how much we exercise but our everyday environment matters too. New research published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society found that exposure to PFAS (“forever chemicals”) during childhood may negatively impact bone development during adolescence. These chemicals are commonly found in drinking water, food packaging, nonstick cookware, stain-resistant materials, and many everyday products. The study is another...

With sunny days ahead, sunscreen becomes a daily essential but not all sunscreens are created equal. The two main types you’ll see are mineral (physical) and chemical sunscreens. Mineral sunscreens use ingredients like Zinc oxide and Titanium dioxide to sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays. Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, absorb into the skin and use ingredients like Oxybenzone, Avobenzone, and Octinoxate to absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat. While both can be...
