Electrolytes Are Everywhere | But Do You Need Them?

Electrolyte packets seem to be everywhere, from the gym to the golf course to social media. But are they something everyone needs, or are they only helpful in certain situations?

The answer is somewhere in the middle.

Electrolytes can be an excellent tool for hydration, but they're not a replacement for water, and not everyone needs them every day.

What Are Electrolytes?

Electrolytes are minerals that help your body function properly. They play an important role in:

  • Supporting hydration
  • Maintaining fluid balance
  • Helping muscles contract
  • Supporting nerve function
  • Regulating blood pressure

The primary electrolytes include sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and chloride.

How Much Should You Take?

There isn't a one-size-fits-all recommendation, but for most healthy adults:

  • Everyday hydration: Water is usually sufficient.
  • Moderate sweating or outdoor activities: One electrolyte packet during or after prolonged activity may be helpful.
  • Heavy sweating, endurance events, or significant fluid loss: One to two packets throughout the day may be appropriate, depending on the amount of sweat and fluid lost.

More isn't always better. Many electrolyte products contain a significant amount of sodium, which may not be appropriate for everyone.

Choosing the Right Electrolyte

Not all electrolyte packets are created equal.
When comparing products, consider:

  • Sugar content
  • Sodium amount
  • Potassium and magnesium content
  • Artificial colors or sweeteners

The "best" electrolyte is the one that matches your individual needs and activity level.

A Few Important Considerations

Electrolyte supplements may not be appropriate for everyone.
Talk with your health care provider or pharmacist before using them regularly if you have:

  • Kidney disease
  • Heart failure
  • High blood pressure
  • Liver disease
  • A condition requiring fluid restriction

Our Pharmacist's Take

Electrolyte packets can be a great addition to your hydration routine, but they aren't necessary for everyone.

In this episode of Intentional Living with Emlah, we’re diving into the science of collagen, beyond the social media hype and beauty trends. I break down why collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, why natural production declines after age 25, and how that impacts your joints, skin, recovery, and overall mobility. You’ll learn why collagen doesn’t replace your protein powder, what makes a high-quality supplement (including hydrolyzed peptides, type I and II collagen, vitamin C, magnesium, and hyaluronic acid), and why hydration is essential for real results. If you’ve been dealing with joint discomfort, slower workout recovery, or changes in your skin, this episode will help you understand how to support your body from the inside out and age with strength and intention.

Let that sink in for a second. That's not a rare outcome; it's closer to a coin flip. And yet bone health is one of the things we tend to think about only after something breaks. The problem is that osteoporosis is silent. There's no pain, no symptom, no warning sign until a fracture happens. By then, you're not just dealing with a broken bone; you're dealing with the downstream effects: mobility loss, longer recovery times, and a higher risk of it happening again. The good news: this is one...
