Why Nutrition Is the Most Important Daily Decision We Make

Happy New Year, friends. As we begin 2026, we’re kicking off a 4-week series focused on the foundation of Intentional Living - the Four Pillars that shape how we care for ourselves and others: Nutrition, Movement, Inner Alignment, and Positive Social Connections. Each week, we’ll explore one pillar and offer practical ways to bring it to life, because real wellness isn’t built in grand moments, it’s strengthened in small, consistent choices that support our bodies, minds, and communities.

This week, we’re starting with a focus on the Nutrition pillar, including a look at why nutrition is so important, not just for long-term health, but because it’s something we all think about every single day, multiple times a day, every time we eat, plan a meal, or fuel between the moments we live.

Why Nutrition Matters More Than Ever

Nutrition is the most frequent “clinical interaction” we have. It’s daily, it’s lifelong, and it deeply influences our energy, immunity, mood, metabolism, and risk for chronic disease. Yet most of us are eating well below what our bodies truly need:

  • Only about 13% of adults eat the recommended daily vegetables, and even fewer meet vegetable variety guidelines.
  • About 87% don’t meet fruit recommendations, leaving gaps in vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber.
  • Most adults consume far more added sugar, saturated fats, and refined carbs than is optimal for heart and metabolic health.
  • Our collective eating patterns contribute to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and digestive imbalance, conditions that are often preventable or modifiable with better nutritional habits.

In short, most of us aren’t malnourished in calories, we’re malnourished in nutrients. And while food isn’t the only piece of health, nutrition touches everything else: how we move, how we think, how we feel, and how we connect.

A Simple, High-Impact Place to Start: Fiber

Despite its massive role in heart health, gut balance, blood sugar, and inflammation, only about 5% of Americans meet the recommended daily fiber intake, meaning 95% of us are falling short of this fundamental nutrient that supports digestion, satiety, microbiome diversity, and long-term wellness.

Why does this matter? Because fiber helps:

  • Regulate blood glucose after meals
  • Feed beneficial gut bacteria
  • Support healthy cholesterol levels
  • Promote consistent digestion
  • Increase feelings of fullness, which can help with weight management

And yet most adults consume far less than the 25–38 grams per day recommended for most people. Fiber isn’t complicated, it’s consistent food choices we can make every day.

And if you feel like you’re missing the fiber mark and think supplementation might be right for you, email me, because sometimes nutrition support requires more than food alone. Recognizing that real wellness is built in the daily diet, but also acknowledging that sometimes supplementation is needed in addition to intentional nutrition.

Fiber Made Fun (Yes, Even for Kids!)

One of my favorite fiber-packed staples is chia seed pudding. It checks every box: high fiber, heart healthy, blood sugar supportive, omega-rich, and simple to make. My kids are obsessed and if that isn’t proof enough, even our pharmacy manager’s 1- and 3-year-olds devour it. When toddlers approve your recipe, you know you’ve hit gold.

In this episode of Intentional Living with Emlah, I was honored to welcome Dr. Emily Roedersheimer, DO, IFMCP, founder of Balanced Living Functional Medicine. Diagnosed young with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Dr. Emily lived the reality of chronic illness from the patient side: pain, medications, uncertainty, and the feeling of not having real answers. That experience sparked a shift - she began asking why and exploring what else was possible beyond prescriptions. Through intentional daily practices rooted in nutrition, movement, inner alignment, and supportive community, she reversed her disease and reclaimed her health, inspiring both her career and her life’s philosophy. Together, we explore the power of meaningful, whole-person care and reinforce a core truth we both live by: there is more to health than prescriptions.

As we close out our 4-week journey through the Four Pillars of Intentional Living - Nutrition, Movement, Inner Alignment, and now our fourth and final pillar - Positive Social Connections - I keep coming back to one simple truth: wellness is not meant to be done alone. This pillar is often the most overlooked, yet it may be the most powerful. Research shows that loneliness and social isolation are linked to a 26–29% higher risk of premature death, a risk comparable to well-known factors like...

We’ve spent the last few weeks walking through the Four Pillars of Intentional Living, and this week we’re focusing on one of my favorites: Inner Alignment. Inner Alignment can mean many things, emotional steadiness, mental clarity, feeling grounded in your day-to-day life. But as a pharmacist, I often look at Inner Alignment through a slightly different (and very practical) lens: biomarker alignment. Because here’s the truth, your body whispers long before it screams. Subtle symptoms show up...

This week, we’re turning our attention to the Movement pillar. Movement is about more than formal workouts or step goals (although these are important) it’s about supporting how our bodies are designed to function every day. Regular movement improves insulin sensitivity, supports cardiovascular health, preserves muscle mass, and plays a critical role in metabolic and hormonal balance. Even brief bouts of movement throughout the day can reduce inflammation, enhance circulation, and improve...
