Why Acne Isn’t Just a Skin Issue

Acne isn’t just a teenage problem and it’s rarely just about your skin. For many teens and adults, breakouts are influenced by hormones, inflammation, gut health, stress, and nutrient status. That’s why quick fixes often fall short, and why a more supportive, inside-out approach matters.

Teen vs. Adult Acne: What’s Different?

While acne shows up at different life stages, the drivers can vary:

  • Teen acne is often fueled by puberty-related hormone surges that increase oil production and clog pores. Support tends to focus on gentle skincare, inflammation control, and key nutrients like zinc and vitamin D.
  • Adult acne is more commonly linked to hormonal fluctuations, stress, gut health, blood sugar balance, and inflammation. Breakouts often appear along the jawline or chin and may persist despite “doing everything right.”

Understanding the difference helps guide more effective, age-appropriate support.

Common Drivers of Acne

Acne can be triggered or worsened by:

  • Hormonal fluctuations (menstrual cycle, PCOS, perimenopause)
  • Inflammation and oxidative stress
  • Insulin resistance and blood sugar swings
  • Gut imbalance
  • Chronic stress and poor sleep
  • Certain medications or skincare products

Nutrition & Lifestyle Still Matter

Foundational habits make a difference:

  • Prioritizing protein, fiber, and healthy fats to support blood sugar balance
Reducing ultra-processed foods that promote inflammation
  • Managing stress (yes, stress hormones absolutely affect skin)
  • Gentle, consistent skincare (more products ≠ better results)

Where Supplements Can Help

Targeted supplements can support the underlying contributors to acne when used intentionally:

  • Zinc – Supports immune function, wound healing, and oil balance
  • Omega-3 fatty acids – Help calm inflammation
  • Vitamin D – Plays a role in immune regulation
  • Probiotics – Support gut health and inflammation balance

The Takeaway

Acne is complex and that’s actually good news. It means there are multiple ways to support clearer skin beyond harsh topicals or repeated antibiotics. Supplements aren’t magic, but when paired with nutrition, lifestyle support, and the right skincare, they can be powerful tools in a more sustainable plan.

If you’re dealing with persistent teen or adult acne and want help choosing the right support, I’m always happy to help guide you.

Clearer skin starts with understanding what your body is asking for.

This week on Intentional Living with Emlah, I’m joined by my brilliant friend Dr. Lara Zakaria (PharmD, CNS, IFMCP) for a “juicy” deep dive into one topic the world can’t stop talking about: protein. Lara breaks down Nutrition 101 in a way that actually makes sense - macronutrients vs micronutrients (and why phytonutrients deserve their own episode), then brings it back to the real question: how much protein do we truly need, and why might women especially be under-eating it? We talk practical strategies for hitting protein goals without living in the kitchen, the pros/cons of plant vs animal protein (with love for my vegans and vegetarians - plus key labs like B12 and iron to consider), and the often-overlooked role of digestion (yes, chewing and calming your nervous system matters). And yes, Dr. Lara climbs on her soapbox to defend the humble egg, reminding us that building muscle isn’t about getting “bulky” - it’s about protecting your brain, bones, metabolism, and future self.

I was folding laundry while mentally preparing to have a difficult conversation. My shoulders were tight. My jaw was clenched. I was bracing for mental contact with someone who wasn’t even in the room. My daughter hugged me from behind and said, “Mom, why do you look mad?” She was right. I was bracing for something that hadn’t happened yet.

So I softened by just 10%. So I could pretend to her that everything was ok. She called me out. So I dropped my shoulders. Unclenched my jaw. Took one slow breath. Nothing about the conversation changed. But I did. I showed up calmer. Clearer. More grounded. This week’s intentional initiative: “ When you notice tension creeping in, soften by only 10%. One breath. One small release.

We don’t have to wait for life to calm down. Sometimes we just need to soften inside it.

Every morning, before emails, before my children are awake, before the day gets loud, I “make” my morning drink. It’s simple. It’s consistent. It’s non-negotiable. And it’s one of the most supportive habits I’ve built for my body. It sets the tone for my entire day. So what’s in my water? Three simple, evidence-based supplements I trust and use daily. Creatine, Collagen, and Fiber. These are foundational. And foundations are what actually move the needle. Why These 3 Work Better Together I’m...

March marks Sleep Awareness Month, a time dedicated to highlighting the importance of sleep for our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Quality sleep isn’t a luxury; it’s a foundation for healthier living, better productivity, and happier days. Sleep by the Numbers About one-third of U.S. adults don’t get enough sleep (less than 7 hours per night). Lack of sleep is linked to increased health risks like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, anxiety, and depression. More than 50-70 million...

When we talk about gut health, immunity, or hormones, there’s one critical ecosystem that still doesn’t get nearly enough attention: vaginal flora. The vaginal microbiome is made up of beneficial bacteria, primarily Lactobacillus species, that help maintain a healthy, protective environment. These bacteria keep vaginal pH slightly acidic, which is essential for comfort, odor control, and protection against unwanted bacteria and yeast. When this balance is supported, things feel normal. When...
