Testosterone… for Women? Let’s Talk About It.

When most people hear “hormone replacement therapy,” they immediately think of estrogen. Occasionally progesterone enters the conversation.

But there is another hormone that plays a meaningful role in women’s health, one that is often overlooked.

Testosterone.

Yes, women produce testosterone too. And for many women in midlife, declining testosterone levels can contribute to symptoms that are commonly dismissed as “just aging.”

Things like:

  • Low libido
  • Reduced motivation or drive
  • Decreased muscle strength
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Changes in mood or mental clarity

While testosterone levels in women are naturally much lower than in men, they still play an important role in overall vitality, sexual health, and body composition.

Why Topical Testosterone?

When testosterone therapy is considered for women, it is typically used in very small, physiologic doses. One of the most common approaches is topical testosterone, which is applied to the skin.

This method allows the hormone to be absorbed gradually through the skin and into the bloodstream, helping maintain more stable hormone levels.

Topical formulations are often preferred because they:

  • Allow precise dosing adjustments
  • Avoid large hormone fluctuations
  • Can be customized for individual patients

Many women receive these formulations through compounded prescriptions, which allows dosing that is appropriate for female physiology.

The Importance of Individualized Care

Like all hormone therapy, testosterone therapy should never be one-size-fits-all.

Before considering therapy, it’s important to evaluate:

  • Symptoms
  • Hormone levels
  • Overall health history
  • Individual goals

In many cases, hormone therapy is only one piece of the picture. Lifestyle, nutrition, sleep, and metabolic health all play important roles in how women feel during midlife.

The goal is not simply replacing hormones, it’s creating a comprehensive strategy that supports long-term health and quality of life.

Why This Conversation Matters

For decades, many women’s midlife symptoms were dismissed or minimized. Fortunately, that conversation is changing.

Today, more clinicians are recognizing that thoughtful, individualized hormone therapy, including testosterone when appropriate, can be an important part of helping women feel like themselves again.

The key is working with healthcare professionals who understand midlife physiology and personalized treatment approaches.

In this week’s episode of Intentional Living with Emlah, I sit down with my friend Marianne Flannery, entrepreneur, mother, coach, and founder of Reach Fitness right here in Powell. We talk about the power of movement, the importance of building muscle as we age, and why community can make all the difference when it comes to staying consistent with exercise. Marianne shares how Reach Fitness was built around connection, resilience, and meeting people exactly where they are, whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just getting started. If you’ve ever struggled to stay motivated to move your body, this conversation is a powerful reminder that sometimes the hardest step is simply opening the door and showing up.

We often think about health as the supplements we take, the foods we eat, or how much we exercise but our everyday environment matters too. New research published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society found that exposure to PFAS (“forever chemicals”) during childhood may negatively impact bone development during adolescence. These chemicals are commonly found in drinking water, food packaging, nonstick cookware, stain-resistant materials, and many everyday products. The study is another...

With sunny days ahead, sunscreen becomes a daily essential but not all sunscreens are created equal. The two main types you’ll see are mineral (physical) and chemical sunscreens. Mineral sunscreens use ingredients like Zinc oxide and Titanium dioxide to sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays. Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, absorb into the skin and use ingredients like Oxybenzone, Avobenzone, and Octinoxate to absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat. While both can be...

Magnesium is one of the most commonly recommended supplements but not all forms work the same. If you’ve ever taken magnesium and thought “this didn’t do anything”… you may not have been taking the right type for your goal or symptom. Here’s a simple breakdown to help you choose intentionally: My go-to favorites?
