Confused About Bioidentical HRT? You’re Not Alone!

Hi friends,

If you’re navigating perimenopause or menopause, you may have questions about your hormones and what options are available.

What Is HRT?

As hormone levels change during perimenopause and menopause, you may experience hot flashes, night sweats, trouble sleeping, mood changes, or other frustrating symptoms. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can help relieve certain symptoms and improve quality of life.

Bioidentical vs. Conventional HRT

Conventional HRT often uses synthetic or animal-derived hormones. These hormones differ slightly in structure from the naturally occurring hormones in our bodies. Bioidentical hormones are derived from plants and have the same structure as the hormones that our bodies naturally produce. Bioidentical hormones are present in certain commercially available products and in compounded HRT. Often, bioidentical hormones are found in products that you put on your skin (though not always), while conventional hormones are usually in products that you would take by mouth.

Conventional HRT is not necessarily the opposite of bioidentical HRT. Some conventional, FDA-approved products contain bioidentical hormones, while others use different hormone formulations.

Depending on your needs, compounded HRT may offer customized strengths or combinations when suitable FDA-approved options aren't available.

You Don't Have to Navigate This Alone!

At Powell Pharmacy, we work alongside healthcare providers specializing in menopause care to help women understand their options and access customized compounded medications when appropriate.

In this episode of Intentional Living with Emlah, I sit down with Dr. Lexi Meister, a board-certified women’s health and pelvic floor physical therapist and owner of Columbus Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy. We talk about how the pelvic floor affects bladder and bowel function, intimacy, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and exercise, and why Kegels aren’t the answer to everything. Dr. Meister explains how breathing, core coordination, and individualized care can make a real difference. Symptoms like leaking, urgency, constipation, or painful sex deserve attention, and you don’t have to accept them as a normal part of aging or having children.

In this episode of Intentional Living with Emlah, I sit down with my former pharmacy preceptor and dear friend, Dr. Laura Duvall, a pharmacist, mother of three, and breast cancer survivor. Laura shares her diagnosis at 42, her recovery, and how she talked with her kids along the way. Her story is a reminder to stay current on your screenings, speak up when something feels off, and let others show up for you. Sometimes a warm meal or a handwritten note is all it takes to feel less alone.

Let that sink in for a second. That's not a rare outcome; it's closer to a coin flip. And yet bone health is one of the things we tend to think about only after something breaks. The problem is that osteoporosis is silent. There's no pain, no symptom, no warning sign until a fracture happens. By then, you're not just dealing with a broken bone; you're dealing with the downstream effects: mobility loss, longer recovery times, and a higher risk of it happening again. The good news: this is one...
